Developed to fill the need for a portable, self-contained coating machine for facilitating the development of coating solutions, the Mini-Labo™ unit is well suited to compliment a well equipped coating development laboratory.
Able to make useful samples from as little as a teaspoon of solution, the design of the Mini-Labo™ is focused on ease of use and conservation of rare or expensive materials. Using a 3 or 4 inch wide roll of every-day PET film, the Mini-Labo™ can transport a 2” x 4” sample of a test web either over the Microgravure™ coating head, or under the “applicator box” coater.
Microgravure™ coating is a Yasui Seiki patented method of direct-reverse-kiss-gravure coating, with a unique small diameter gravure roll. Geometry of the web and small diameter roll with reverse ‘shearing’ in the coating puddle gives a very uniform and smooth coating.
Applicator Box coating is a variation of the ‘Byrd Bar’ coater, a restraining plate with a fixed gap that determines coating thickness. The ‘applicator box’ has the advantages of restricting side-flow of solution, and in addition, has four different gaps on each applicator box. This coating technique well predicts the behavior of a solution in a Production size slot die coater, while only needing a few grams of coating solution. So, many screening and exploratory experiments can be economically and quickly conducted.
The Mini-Labo™ test coater plugs into a normal 120 volt outlet. It has casters for easy transport as well as jack screw feet to stabilize the unit for normal operations. Web speed and Microgravure™ roll speed are adjustable, to control coated thickness.
Mini-Labo™ lab coaters may be purchased, or economically leased for a full week of intensive testing.
